Braids 2016 - Details for your visit

Your Booking

All classes will be held on on campus at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA.   The address for the University is:

If you are renting equipment, the price for renting equipment is $10 per day plus $10 for tama so the total price has been provided to you.   You should bring this payment in cash to the Conference.  

You have registered to attend the banquet on Friday night.  Please contact braids2016@gmail.com if you have any dietary restrictions since a special order is required for the banquet.  (The cafeteria at the University of Puget Sound has an area dedicated to manage dietary restrictions throughout the rest of the week)

If you have registered to stay on Saturday 23rd July and Saturday 30th July you will have been told.  When you arrive on 23rd July, please check in at the Wheelock Student Center where there is a registration desk until 5pm.   You will still need to register for the conference on Sunday.   If you are likely to arrive after 5pm on Sat 23rd, please let us know at braids2016@gmail.com.

You will have told us which tour you would like and this will have been confirmed to you.   You have elected Option x of the museum tour

Museum Visit

The buses will depart for the museum visits at 9:00 on Wednesday morning and we’ll let you know you will be directed to the coach for the tour that you have selected.   It will not be possible to switch tours once they have been allocated due to the numbers assigned to each coach. 

A separate email has been sent out about the tours.    The tour details are given at the end of the letter.

Checking In – Registration and Housing

Please go to the Wheelock Student Center on campus to check in for both registration and housing.  This is located near the Rasmussen Rotunda.   You can see the entrance to the Wheelock Student Center and the Rasmussen Rotunda in the photograph at the following link.  (The entrance to the Wheelock Student Center is to the left of the rotunda)  http://www.pugetsound.edu/about/campus-the-northwest/places-spaces/wheelock-student-center/

Check in is from 3-6 pm on Sunday, July 24, 2016.  If you are arriving after 6 pm, please let us know so that we can inform the University and make alternative arrangements to get you settled.

Parking

There is parking on and around the University of Puget Sound campus near Trimble Hall that is free for the duration of the conference

Meals

Meals covered in your Braids 2016 registration include lunch Monday through Friday.  If you are staying on campus, your meals are covered starting with dinner on Sunday, July 24th and ending with breakfast on Saturday, July 30th.  The cafeteria is located in the Wheelock Student Center

·         Breakfast - 7:00 - 9:00 am 

        Lunch - 11:30 am – 1:30 pm.   (On Wednesday, we will be on the Museum tour and lunch will be provided.)

         Dinner - 4.30 pm and 6:30 pm (The conference banquet will be on Friday, July 29 at 6:00 pm)

For Braids 2016 participants that are not staying on campus or will be arriving early and/or departing late, meals in the cafeteria may be purchased:  $8.85 for breakfast, $10.70 for lunch and $12.60 for dinner.

Trimble Hall Kitchens

The suites in Trimble Hall are equipped with a kitchenette with a refrigerator and microwave.  However, there is no crockery or pots and pans.  You may want to bring a bowl, plate and knife and fork with you along with your favourite cup or mug.

If you are arriving on Saturday 23rd July and/or staying on Saturday the 30th, you will have to organize all your own meals for those days (see Meals above).  The University of Puget Sound is located in a residential neighbourhood and there are no restaurants or shops nearby.

What to Bring

If you are staying at Trimble Hall, you will be staying in a single room in a “suite” with a shared bathroom, toilet, living room, and kitchenette.   You can view the accommodation on the internet http://www.pugetsound.edu/student-life/campus-living/residence-life/residence-halls-houses/trimble-hall/ or google Trimble Hall, University of Puget Sound

Bedding, a pillow, and towels are provided, but not toiletries such as soap and shampoo.    There are laundry facilities on each floor of the building.

The weather in Tacoma can be very variable so it is best to bring layers of clothes to wear and an umbrella.   It is a short walk outside from Trimble Hall to the Wheelock Student Center and to the classrooms.

USA adapter plugs are needed for any non-US electrical equipment. 

There is free WiFi access throughout the campus. 

There is no smoking in any building in Washington State.

There is a cash machine in the Wheelock Student Center.     Remember - you may need US dollars as soon as you arrive, so do change some before you come or get change at the airport.

Please bring a notebook and pencil and any other materials and equipment  specified by your tutors.  

Register for the Conference

You can check-in for the conference from 3:00 – 6:00 pm on Sunday afternoon in the Wheelock Student Center (next to the Rasmussen Rotunda).   We will have signs to direct you.    If you are likely to arrive later than 6:00 pm on Sunday, please let us know by email to braids2016@gmail.com .


The welcome reception will start at 7:00 pm in the Rasmussen Rotunda in the Wheelock Student Center.  Information about classrooms will be provided with your registration packet.

Equipment rental

If you have arranged to rent equipment, for Monday’s classes it will be available for collection from the Trimble Hall Seminar room between 4.00 and 6.00 pm on Sunday afternoon.   The arrangements for the rest of the week will be provided on registration.  

The rental cost is $10 per day for each piece of equipment (ie marudai, karakumidai, takadai) and $10 per day for the associated tama.

Tutors display of work 

There will be a display of tutors work in the Trimble Hall Seminar room (1st floor of Trimble Hall).   Tutors should bring their items to that room no later than Sunday between 3:00 – 5:00 pm.

Braiders Bazaar in the Rotunda – two nights only!

This is an informal sale of braid-related items.  It will be held in the Rasmussen Rotunda on Monday and Thursday evening from approximately 7:00 – 9:00 pm   Those people that have applied for tables have already been notified.    The room will be available from 6:00 pm for setup.

We suggest that you price things in round numbers so that making change will be easier.  For example, $4 not $3.99.  Don’t forget to bring small notes and coins to make change for your customers.

Please bring US dollars because although some of the vendors can take card payments, there will be several who are not able to do this.   There is a cash machine very close to the Rotunda.

For USA participants, please bring small notes and coins to help the vendors make  change.  There will be lots of goodies to buy!

Travelling to Tacoma

The University of Puget Sound is located at 1500 North Warner St in Tacoma, Washington, approximately 30 miles south of Seattle and 15 miles north of Olympia.

By Air  Look for flights that fly into SeaTac (Seattle International Airport).  This is the airport that serves the Seattle-Tacoma area.  On arrival at SeaTac airport there are shuttle services that will take you from the airport to the campus.  Depending on the service it will cost between $30 and $150 one way for one person (costs reduce significantly if rides are shared).

By Bus There are three bus lines servicing the Tacoma area. 

Pierce Transit buses go closest to the University - Route number 16 stops at the corner of N. 15th and Alder streets, one block from the Wheelock Student Center on the Puget Sound campus.

Route number 14 travels from the main stop at Puyallup Avenue to 11th and Union St.

Greyhound buses travel to downtown Tacoma, 510 Puyallup Avenue.  Transfer to Pierce Transit.

Sound Transit buses go from SeaTac to downtown Tacoma. Transfer to Pierce Transit.

Driving to Campus

When the driving instructions were sent out in the final registration letter, they were incomplete. The instructions below are given to the Wheelock Student Center where all attendees should check in. You should also check your directions using a tool such as Google Maps or MapQuest. The instructions should have read

...

From I-5, take exit 133, Interstate 705 north, City Center exit. Exit at Schuster Parkway. Continue for approximately one mile, and stay to the left. Exit to the left (Schuster Parkway), and follow Schuster along the water. Stay to the right and proceed approximately 1.5 miles. Exit right onto North 30th. Continue through the traffic signal in Old Town and up the hill.

From 30th Ave, turn left at North Alder. Continue approximately one mile. The campus will be on your right. Parking is available by turning right into the visitor parking area in front of Jones Hall off of 15th Street, or in lots located at 14th Street (Wheelock Student Center) or 13th Street.

On-campus parking will be free for the duration of the conference.
