    Workshop description:
A two-day exploration into this small yet exceptional object.
MS.8932 is a medieval embroidered folded almanac, and its background context will be revealed through powerpoint presentations. This will set the scene for some practice-based learning, to gain a greater appreciation of the work involved in MS.8932’s production. Students will have the opportunity to make their own folded paper manuscript, providing visual comprehension of its unusual format. This will be followed by an investigation of one small area of the embroidered cover.

Stitch skills will be absorbed through the making of large-scale test pieces, with the option of continuing with more appropriate materials (available for purchase).

    I will provide:
Light lunch and drinks (dietary restrictions = please advise in advance)
    Loan of equipment in class
    Materials for classroom test pieces

    Students will need:
Optional extras: Magnifier and light for stitching.

    2nd & 3rd April 2024
    10am – 4pm

    Venue:
    Ottery St Mary, Devon, UK.
    Price:

    Workshop description:
Make a range of different silk braids using recipes from historic manuals dating from the 15th and 17th centuries. The workshop will start with the basic principles of the technique, looking at materials, preparation and the process of loop-manipulation.
Students will begin by working through a series of different braid structures and patterns that can all be made by a single worker. Then, making the most of this Ideal opportunity, students will be able to team up with a partner in order to try out some more elaborate braids that require ‘two bodies’ (as well as looking at some ideas of how the recipes can be adapted to do on your own). Historical context and the study of surviving examples will be covered throughout the workshop.

    Workshop description:

The tiny ʻstrawberryʼ purse in the Metropolitan Museum (accession number
29.23.23) was originally described as crochet. However, Jacqui has revived the
historic technique to create a replica. This beautiful little purse is made entirely of little stitches (no fabric!) and can be easily worked in the hand, making it an ideal travel project. During the workshop, Jacqui will share her research work by discussing other surviving examples and their context. The Metropolitanʼs purse will be examined in detail, answering such questions as to why the design goes wonky!
Students will have the opportunity to practice the techniques before making their own version of the strawberry purse, or the Ring ‘O Roses version based on Lynn Hulse’s purse. All materials provided.

    Workshop description:

Kumihimo is the gentle art of Japanese braidmaking. This introductory course for beginners and improvers covers the basic knowledge required for braiding on a marudai. Those with experience can start the course as a re-cap, before moving on to new territory. Small class numbers allow for individual tuition, allowing students to progress at their own pace in any direction they please.
The rhythmic movements of kumihimo make the craft an aesthetic activity and the finished braids can be the perfect complement to any textile craft. They can also be a feature in their own right, such as jewellery. Students will be able to produce a range of samples, with the option of continuing to finished items.

The course will cover various aspects of the subject including the following-
    1) Equipment-what, why and how.
    2) Warp threads - what, why and how.
    3) Working techniques-how to braid and improve one’s style.
    4) Braiding sequences - a variety of different structures and patterns.
    5) Pattern design - how to use the grid system to create your own designs
    6) Finishing techniques - a range of fancy finishes including tassels.

    I will provide:
Light lunch and drinks (dietary restrictions = please advise in advance)
    Loan of equipment in class

A small selection of threads (traditional threads will be available for purchase).

    Students will need:
Additional threads/yarns in a range of colours: any type – from chunky wools, fancy fibres though to cotton perle, fine silk, etc.
Own equipment: Marudai, bobbins, counterbalance weights, chopstick, S-hook, warping posts and scissors (or equipment available for loan in class).
Comfortable clothing (trousers or full skirt) for a ‘cello’ playing posture.

    Date:
    21st & 22nd September 2024
    10am – 4pm

    Venue:
    Ottery St Mary, Devon, UK.

Each of our online workshops is run by an expert braiding tutor over 3 – 4 weeks via written instructions and live Zoom sessions.  The Zoom sessions are recorded and available to view for 1 week after each session.

Weeks 1 and 2 are delivered via BraidsandBands on groups.io.  If you are not already on BraidsandBands, you will need to create an account on groups.io and ask to join the BraidsandBands group as follows:

  • Click on “Sign up” and create an account using your email address and a password of your choice (at least 6 characters long) and click on “create an account”.

  • You will be sent a confirmation email.  Click on the link within the email to confirm your account.  This takes you back to the website and enables you to customise your account, find groups and create groups.

  • To find “BraidsandBands”, click on “Find groups”, search for “BraidsandBands” and click on the link.

Week 3 of our online workshops is offered to Braid Society members only.  Members should log into this website, go to the MEMBERS’ AREA and click on BRAIDS WORKSHOP FORUM.  Each workshop is listed and the messages and downloads are posted into the workshop files.  If you subscribe to the Forum, or to a particular workshop, you will receive email notifications when new information is posted.
