A chance to discover more about Japanese braids and their use in Samurai armour. Surviving suits in UK collections will be used as the springboard for discovering the various types of braids and their function. Students will be shown how to document and identify braids before having the opportunity to recreate specific examples. The ancient technique of kute uchi (loop-manipulated braidmaking) will be explained and old instruction books investigated. Students will be able to reproduce various braids working singly, and with a partner for the two-person recipes. Alternative methods of reproducing armour braids will also be considered, so that students can work a two-person braid independently. These instructions will include previously unpublished work about the beautiful ‘kikko’ patterned braid.
The classes will be held in Ottery St Mary
