Nordic and world braids and bands 2022

5th international conference on Braiding

The Fifth International Conference on Braiding was held in Svendborg, Denmark in  August 14-20, 2022.   The exhibition of the Tutors' work can be found here

It was held at a lovely venue in Svendborg on the south coast of the island of Funen.   Getting there from the International airport near Copenhagen is an easy 2.5 hour train journey and the entire group will be able to stay together in a lovely setting for both accommodation, meals and workshops.   We are aware that international travel is expensive and it is our priority to make this affordable.

We have created a wonderful programme of workshops, taster sessions and lectures that will provide a full week of learning, experiencing new cultures, meeting up with old friends and making new ones.    Covid 19 has affected everyone around the world but with the vaccines available and the work in Denmark, we are confident that by August 2022, we will be able to meet.

We are highlighting Nordic braid techniques such as tablet weaving, loop manipulation, rigid heddle/inkle braiding, fingerweaving, sprang, lace, whipcording, tatting, nalbinding and lucet and their counterparts in the rest of the world.   There are also be workshops in kumihimo techniques (although we cannot provide large equipment), ply-split braiding and others.

The following pages provide information about the programme, the workshops and tester sessions, as well as the lectures.   There is a page about the accommodation in a hotel in Svendborg which will host the conference activities and we will be providing more information about travel as the Conference date gets closer.

All the information about registration can be found on the registration page.    Registration is now open and you can make your workshop selections until 31 December 2021.   Workshops will be allocated in January and participants will be notified then.   Full registration will be open until 1 April unless the conference has reached the maximum number of participants, although the workshops you would like may no longer be available.

The Conference is open to anyone interested in textiles, not just members of the Braid Society but registration will be for the full week.   There will be no option for partial registration.

This map shows where Svendborg is situated in Denmark.

It is a beautiful area and there is plenty to explore locally

Svendborg has been named the most charming shopping town in all of Denmark, and a couple of hours is enough to sample the town’s unique atmosphere.

Visit Svendborg’s museums for a cultural experience, participate in an event in the town centre, discover the amazing scenery by going cycling or hiking, or go on a sailing trip around the South Fyn Archipelago, on your own boat or on one of the ferries departing from Svendborg.
